If you plan or need to frequently use the space, a larger space may be more convenient than one packed to capacity.
Plan your storage space. Place items in front that will be accessed frequently.
Allow for walkways. Completely fill each box with your heaviest items on the bottom and lighter items on top. Try to keep your boxes in uniform sizes. They are much easier to stack that way.
Use good quality storage boxes. We sell cardboard and other packing material – see packing supplies.
There are prohibited storage goods that every storage facility will not allow. Common sense and laws determine what may be stored. Check with us if you are unsure.
Label all boxes on all four sides for easy identification.
All glass items should be individually wrapped. Stand plates and saucers on edge. Wrapped glasses should be placed near the top of cartons. Fill all pockets with packing material. Label all boxes containing glassware, and do not place heavy items on boxes containing glassware.
Wrap pictures and mirrors individually in bubble wrap, mark as fragile and stack on end, not against walls.
Clothing and curtains should be stored on hangers.
Never pack bedding or clothes in plastic bags , the items will sweat and spoil.
Food crumbs or stains should be removed before storage to avoid storing anything that may attract pests.
Furniture with drawers can be utilised as storage places for china, silverware and small items. Wrap in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage.
A refrigerator, freezer or washing machine should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar. Larger appliances make excellent “packing cases” for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes. Make sure that stoves and cooking equipment are cleaned before they are stored.
Always place a protective cover over your soft furnishings.
Bicycles and other metal items will rust over time if not protected. To prevent rust, wipe all metal surfaces with proper agent.
Pack books in sealed plastic and lay them flat to protect their spines.
If you stand mattresses on end, be sure to “prop” them up off the floor.
Do not lean items against the walls, pack your items at least 150mm from all 4 walls.
Clean all outside tools and equipment before packing.
